The crushing aftermath of climate change

A STORY FROM A VULNERABLE COMMUNITY

Sylhet, in northeastern Bangladesh, is surrounded by Indian hills on three sides. Geographically, the Sylhet region has the largest number of wetlands in Bangladesh and receives substantial water from India due to its low elevation. The wetlands remain submerged for almost half of the year, especially during the monsoon season when more areas get flooded due to heavy rainfall upstream. Cultivation is the main source of income for people in this region. They can harvest one crop during the dry season before the monsoon starts. However, due to changes in weather patterns and unexpected floods, farmers are often unable to harvest their crops on time.

This region experienced the worst flood in centuries in 2022. Many areas flooded for the first time, including divisional and district towns, which were cut off from the rest of the country. Unexpected and excessive rainfall caused massive floods. The wetlands and low-lying areas were predominantly affected, displacing many people from their homes. Life became difficult for those who heavily rely on agriculture and were unable to repay loans taken out for planting their crops due to the devastated harvest. As a result, many people were forced to migrate or move to other places and industries in search of immediate income.

Mikkel is a passionate street artist living in Aarhus. His works focus predominantly on birds. He sees humans building cities that destroy natural habitats. Nevertheless, birds and animals manage to live alongside humans even though fewer trees and places are left for them in the cities.

Art Takes Flight

A story from Aarhus

Technology helps humans to stay connected, however, it also keeps us isolated when we miss the connection with nature.

Migrants Worker

A story from Dhaka

Up to 400,000 low-income migrants arrive in Dhaka each year, having fled vulnerable coastal and inland areas.  Flooding, drought, rising sea levels, farmland rendered useless due to salinity levels and poverty are some of the reasons why masses of people flock to the cities in an attempt to secure a degree of economic security.

Many of these people reside in urban slums, particularly in Dhaka.  Dhaka is considered by many to be the stronghold of economic opportunity in Bangladesh, but as one of the most populated megacities on earth, it is fraught with problems of its own, including poverty, health hazards and the impact of climate change.
